Costa Rica Cost Of Living Update: Can of mace-$20
It was a dark, windy night. The kind where the leaves rustle into mini cyclones before scattering away. I was quietly writing when I heard a tap at the window. I looked up, saw nothing, and went back to my manuscript.
The sounds got louder from the window so I crept closer but couldn’t see past the darkness. I reached for the camera, snapped a picture, and this is the image I saw for a split second while the flash went off.
What followed was a long and animated bout of screaming that all but proved I have not acclimated to living in the rainforest.
I have more pictures of this animal attacking another window in my Gallery or at my Facebook page Happier Than A Billionaire.
Nadine – I bought your book (one of the first, and definitely the funniest) in preparation for departing the US when Social Security hits. I think I read your kinkajou story over and over and laughed each time. He is really cute and I can see why you love them.
I just found your blog (and a Twitter post too – never been a Twitter-er, but plan to follow, if only for the amazing photos) and I am reading it from current to the beginning, including comments, and just got to this and had to write.
I worry about going down alone, a vieja loca, but I figure that if I can repress the reluctance to change (it IS scary!), I am pretty sure I will be okay, as you two haven’t managed to kill yourselves yet, and you are pretty adventurous.
I plan to start out near San Ramon, Atenas or Grecia, but will stay away from your crazy neighbor outside Grecia!
Waiting for a second book to come out – Pura Vida!
Thanks Janet!! I told it like it was, the good and the bad. But I tried to keep a sense of humor throughout. And I learned I could get past anything if I could laugh about it that night.
Second book will be out in a few months, putting the finishing touches on it!
Need any help?? call me at 805 366 1261 i am so ready!!!! benn to costa 6 times would love to live there forever!!!!!!! thanks
LOL…thanks Collin!! Since you’ve been here plenty of times, you know that pura vida feeling when you are down here. It’s hard to live once you get used to it.
Not sure who was doin’ the screaming, you, or your visitor after getting “flashed!”
That’s funny! Yes, I think I scared him off. I’ve been waiting for him to come back but no such luck. Although I did hear something trying to get in the attic last night. (I didn’t do any screaming…I promise)
Ok, that would’ve scared me. Is that your new friend?
Thx for your posts. It reminds me that the dream is possible.
We think he might come back tonight. I have my video camera ready. I really hope I can catch him on film.
It’s a kinkajou and they also call them honeybears. I seriously feel silly for screaming now.
Not exaclty a Kinkajou… but a Marta. More related with a Racoon. Some people keep them as pets. But hey, is still a wild mammal.
Thanks Cesar. I suppose they are all part of the same family.
