If I tried to be a little more delicate, I think it would have come off as disingenuous. Your title is brilliant, the $2.99 price for the ebook makes it soo easy to take a chance on a book, and you don’t have to worry about running out of copies after a bump from something like CNN!

      Thanks Deborah!

Reading about your adventures just plain makes me happy. It also inches Costa Rica further up on my list every time I read your blog. 🙂 Congrats on the latest CNN article – and on such a rich and rewarding life!

Thanks Carla! I’m going to try to post more often. Really trying to wrap up the second book.

Congratulations on the CNN article! I found it from your link on Joe Konrath’s blog, and found myself laughing out loud as I looked at the wonderful pictures on the article. Pretty good advertising! Now I want to go! Your title is brilliant, the $2.99 price for the ebook makes it soo easy to take a chance on a book, and you don’t have to worry about running out of copies after a bump from something like CNN! How great is that? Congratulations all around, and I’m looking forward to carving out some time for your book and blog.

Thanks. I couldn’t have predicted this, I was just someone who hated my job and quit to find a happier life. The chance to share my story has been incredible.

There is nothing better than being a writer, and to do it here, in one of the most beautiful places in the world, is a dream come true.

Aside from enjoying the book, I found myself laughing as I appreciated the quality of the “hook” of your first lines! That’s such an awesome beginning. How could anyone stop there?! ^_^

Thanks, I thought about that first line. I just wanted to write the truth, and I felt that if I did, my readers would be able to get inside my head as I went on this journey. If I tried to be a little more delicate, I think it would have come off as disingenuous.

Thanks for reading….I hope I keep you laughing.

Thanks for all the information and funny stories. Me and the wife are heading to Arenal area Thanksgiving week. We are reluctant on renting a car and heading out to the beach areas for the first half and then to Arenal the second half. I get lost too much, even when listening to GPS, bad legs, so last thing we want to be is stranded alone. I know you suggested renting a jeep, 2pm landing at Liberia airport and 3 1/2 hours to find our resort in Arenal in November before pushing darkness? Do we really need to worry much?

    Thanks.

I think it is too late for you to be driving. If you’re not one of those people who has to have a car right away, I would get a driver or shuttle.

I get lost a lot too. Wait…that would be my husband. He gets lost a lot, so it’s easy to spend most of your time trying to figure out how the hell you ended up at a deep end in a coffee field.

Always blame the husband is my motto.

Why’s not stay the night in Liberia and start out early AM for Adrenal? You will enjoy thee drive and if you are like us you want the convenience of the car in Adrenal. This will be our 11th trip to CR and you have to see the beaches. The GPS has quirks but overall reliable. Just remember nothing works like it does in the states but it is well worth any inconvenience.

    Hi there,

I just saw the CNN piece last week, congrats on the feature & thanks for blogging about your inspirational journey.

My girlfriend and I also came down to Costa Rica as I had a work contract which paid for the relocation – which was a huge bonus and a large part of the motivation to say yes to the trip.

I’m glad we did, once you learn to accept the cultural differences and adapt to the pace of life in a place like Tamarindo, you begin to realize just how much this beats the pants off any place with tarred roads, traffic jams and the dreaded 4-by-4 cubicle that kills souls.

Looking forward to reading more of your story. Will be checking in from tie to time.

I couldn’t have said it better. I think the people who are the most happy here realize the differences and accept them. I remember the office, the commute, the traffic when I was working back in the states. That’s never far from my mind when I am sitting at the beach and watching a sting ray jump out of the water. I try to live in the moment, and appreciate the fact that I am lucky enough to live on a planet where this nature exists.

I am fielding tons of emails that say Rob looks like Vin Diesel. He walks around the house now like he’s a action movie hero.

      What have I created?

Hello, i was looking to move there in the next year. I dont plan on staying for good but want to live there for a good year or so. I noticed you only pay 150 per month. That is amazing to me when i am paying 2,000 a month for an apt not by the beach. I was just wondering if there are a lot of homes you can rent/buy in that area that cheap? i am also in my low 20’s so i was wondering if there is a lot of great night life and hows crime? The story on CNN was awesome and i will continue to follow your blog

      Hi,

The deal I got was from a US couple who has their vacation home down here. They are rarely here and needed someone to look out for it. That’s how I got such a great deal. It’s amazing what you can get if you are a nice person and investigate the opportunities.

Once you get here, you will most likely pay around $500/month. Then, you can look around. I know a few people who pay around $300 for a great house. But you have to look around while you are living here.

As for the night life, I live near Tamarindo now and there is a lot of it. Crime is relative. There are some areas of Costa Rica, like in the states, where it is worse. I’ve never had a problem here, but I do know some people who went swimming and left their backpack on the beach unattended. Someone came and stole it. That also goes with the car. Really important not to leave your luggage in there, or a computer on the seat. Snatch and grab is common.

Thanks for following my blog, it’s been quite an adventure.

    Hi
I came across your the CNN article via “WeLoveCostaRica.com” and then discovered this blog. My wife and I plan and dream about the day we can also permanently escape to CR and we are always pleased to see another gringo living life to the fullest. I will get your book ASAP and I am sharing the article and the blog with my friends and family.
So far I have only read the two posts on “I think I need a Dr”; please post the third so I can resume my laughter.
Thanks for putting a huge smile on my face

Thanks!!! My husband makes it very easy to write. He’s a funny guy normally, then when you put him in the middle of Central America, it can get hysterical.

My last installment of his surgery will come out soon. And I promise, I will not dissappoint.

Wow! You have hit the big time, Dave and I couldn’t be happier for you. The book is laugh out loud funny, I spent a few evenings with it and a glass of wine. Now I am busy sharing your blog and your book with friends. All the best.

Thanks Tammy, I’m glad you are enjoying the book. As you can see, my husband makes the stories easy. For someone who says he is always saving me, he pretty much gets us in all the situations he needs to save me from.

I read about you on CNN this morning and bought your book on Kindle. I am about 1/4 of the way through and am completely engrossed in your story. I so hope to be able to do something similar one day.

Thanks you so much, if possible, could you write a review on Amazon. It helps me tremendously. I hope you too come down and check out this area, or any other area you would love to live in.

Even just a week vacation to a country you are passionate about seems to rekindle that adventurous spirit we all had when we were kids.

I caught you on CNN and scrabled to find your blog. I haven’t had time to read a book in years, but I bought your book because your story sounds like a wonderful fantasy daydream, only this story (I assume) is true. We are taking a short vacation next month and I hope to read your book. I also want to peruse your blog. We may take a vacation to Costa Rica to scope out our own beach house!

Thanks you so much. It’s amazing how this adventure of ours worked out. I’m also grateful I have an adventure to write about, there were many days in that office I thought I would never get a chance to do something like this.
